2nd Grade: . Bleezer’s Ice Cream

Welcome to the Ice Cream Shop! We have flavors you have never tried before!

Second grade had so much fun creating new and unusual flavors for their ice cream shops. We worked on our overlapping skills by drawing scoops of ice cream with chunks of 'flavors' inside. We also practiced decoding and sounding out words to create some very unusual menus.
Tasty flavors like: Strawberry and Sand, Pizza and Eyes, and Pencil with Eraser Bits. Yum! This project is inspired by Jack Prelutsky’s poem “Bleezer’s Ice Cream.” Share the poem with your students and give them the task of inventing their own ice cream flavors.

2nd grade: Shelf Creature Pals

Second grade created these super cool shelf buddies using the skills they have learned in previous years of art; pinch-pot were taught in kindergarten and clay-attachment skills were coached in first grade. These little creatures are one of my favorite clay projects. They turned out super cute and have so much personality!

The base of our form is an up-side down pinch-pot that we stuffed with a bit of newspaper to give it support as we worked. Once our attachments were finished, we removed the newspaper and I punched holes at the base using a straw. Once the clay was fired, we used a pipe-cleaner to sew through our holes to become our legs or arms.

Beads add a little more style to the design but are totally optional. (Very few of my kids said no to beads.)

We finished up our sculptures with acrylic paint, being careful not to get too much on our beads.

The kids have been bugging me every week to take them home, but they look so nice in our display case. They are just so worried that they will never get them back, but I made sure to promise them that I would not keep them forever.

2nd Grade: Monkeys, Warm and Cool Colors

Color Theory: Warm and Cool Colors

2nd Grade: Sub-Lesson Lego Super-Heros

Another sub-lesson:
My second graders were challenged to change their blank Lego person in to a super hero. I requested that their first one needed to be an original design, any after that could be a hero of their choice. Is that Aqua-Man? Love my students.

2nd Grade: Louise Nevelson

2nd Grade Assemblage Art

Louise Nevelson was an artist known for her monochromatic abstract sculptures.

In the 1940s, Nevelson experimented with different styles and materials such as wood and junk that she found in the streets of New York. She began working with monochrome paint, particularly black, and assembled the sculpture pieces in groupings.

One of her famous wall pieces might be constructed from bits of old chairs, scrap wood, salvaged railings and rusted gears, but all of these disparate pieces have been abstracted into a unity of form through a single color of paint. Her artwork illustrates the power and simplicity of materials. No matter how humble the supplies those materials can create something beautiful.

2nd Grade: Mix Media Bird Houses

Second grade created these adorable bird house in hopes of Spring soon to be upon us.
We observed the texture found in wooden boards and recreated what we observed with crayons and watercolors. The wax in the crayons creates a resist that pushes away the water in the watercolors leaving a really cool effect on the paper. (Science is AWESOME!)

On another sheet of paper we colored a background that matched a different times of day that our birds would be experiencing.
We added some trimmed green a paper and set to work building our houses out of our 'sheet of wood'.  Soon the birds started to flock to our homes. Chirp, Chirp!

2nd Grade: Mashed-up Photos

As many of you know, student and teacher attention and perseverance wanes as break approaches, so why not put some of that silliness and energy to good use?

Second grade created Mashed-up Photos using images they found in magazines. Normal magazine pictures can be so boring. We don't like boring here in art class! The students spiced up their images by cutting the photos into pieces and adding something interesting that no one has seen before.

Mashed-up Photos where a big hit.

2nd grade: The Nutcracker

Around the time of winter festivals The Nutcracker ballet is preformed all over the world.
My second graders created unique nut-crackers in honor of the ballet using TP rolls and egg-cartons. We looked at traditional and modern designs; comparing the two different styles and evaluating which parts stayed the same or changed.
The kids loved the crazy teeth of the traditional nutcracker, so many were sure to add them to their own designs.

My Saint Anthony kids were lucky enough to go see the ballet live downtown last week.
A number of my kids, from both schools, will be part of some of the performances this year! Since I would be missing out, a  few girls were sweet enough to show me a few of their dance moves. So talented!
This clever artist created their nutcracker with two faces. One is angry and the other side is happy.
